Sacramento, California, March 26, 2026: Minnesota officials, including state Attorney General Keith Ellison and Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty, announced on March 24 that they were suing the Trump Administration for access to the evidence that the federal government was withholding from them concerning the fatal shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by federal agents during immigration raids in Minneapolis in January.[i] The federal government had blocked Minnesota officials from directly investigating these shootings themselves in the immediate aftermath of the killings, and the Trump Administration has continued to deny access to the evidence that the federal government gathered. We applaud the determination of Minnesota officials to hold federal agents accountable not only for the fatal shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, but also for more than a dozen other incidents involving flagrant abuses of power by ICE and Border Patrol officers during “Operation Metro Surge.”

Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty noted that even though the Trump Administration was not cooperating with Minnesota officials in investigating the killings of Good and Pretti, her office had received abundant evidence, including cell phone videos and eye witness accounts, from members of the Minnesota public. Moriarty stated that she is prepared to make charging decisions even if her office doesn’t receive any additional information from the Trump Administration.

We have previously noted in an Americans Against Gun Violence President’s message[ii] and in a post on the In The News page of our Americans Against Gun Violence website[iii] that the cell phone video footage that is publicly available clearly shows that there was no reasonable justification for federal agents to shoot and kill Renee Good or Alex Pretti. On the contrary, the senseless brutality of federal agents captured in these cell phone videos evokes memories of the cell phone videos of the brutal killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer in 2020. Former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of murder in that case, and the three other officers who failed to intervene to prevent Chauvin from killing Floyd were convicted of lesser charges.

We commend Minnesota officials and members of the Minnesota public for their courageous commitment to seeing that federal agents will not be allowed to literally get away with murder under the guise of immigration enforcement; and we trust that Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison and Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty will proceed with criminal charges against the ICE agent, Jonathon Ross, who killed Renee Good and against the Border Patrol agents, whose names have yet to be released, who killed Alex Pretti, regardless of whether the Trump Administration cooperates in sharing evidence with them.
